What decorates my walls!

My home is an eclectic mix of different elements that I’ve collected over the years and through-out my different trips.  I thought that I could show you all a glimpse of some of my favourite things that hang on my walls. Here’s a little tour of my favourite pieces!

The living room

Here is a set of 3 water-colors that I bought on one of my trips to Morocco. These represent scenes from the Essaouira fishing port and were painted on site by a local artist. It’s hard to believe that these cost me only 20$ for the set of three!

This piece is very special to me because it was drawn by my husband. This intricate weave of swirls actually represents Arabic scripts… don’t ask me to translate!

The Hall

This is the very first piece of art that I hung in my very first apartment. A lithography of my home town. A little something my father gave my when I left home to come to university here in Montreal… 9 years ago already!

This is the poster from my final design exhibition from the University of Montreal. I see it every day and it reminds me of  the four great years that I spent studying industrial design and all of the wonderful people I met during that period of my life.

The Kitchen

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this before, but my father owns some restaurants. This is actually an old breakfast menu that used to hang in one of the restaurants. I worked there many many summers (the morning shift actually) and this really reminds me of my childhood and all of my summers there!

The Bedroom

This frame really means a lot to me. A few years back, my grandmother gave me the paper dolls that she played with as a child. These are literally about 80 years old. I really loved the faded colors and the detailing of the faces and clothing. I thought that they needed a special place, so I showcased them in this framed montage that hangs on my bedroom wall.

Last but not least, these neat little frames that mimic the old Polaroid pictures. I have a montage of different shots of my husband and I hanging just over our bed.

My cross stitch family

I few months ago I came across this great idea of making cross-stiching people. I instantly fell in love. I knew I had to make my own cross-stitch family.

The first step is to draw up the different members that you want to represent. I tried to add details that are specific to each person. For example, my dad always wears a bow-tie, so I added one on his cross-stich persona. Drawing out the cross-stitch people is the longest (and hardest) part but once that’s done everything goes well.

Here are my parents.

Myself and my sister Anne.

And last but not least, my sister Elizabeth.

Each square on the grid paper is equal to one little x of cross-stitching. All you have to do is follow the drawn up plan.

I framed-up my family portrait and offered it to my parents at Christmas.

Paris on my window sill

My miniature Ville Lumière.

Whenever I’m thinking of Paris, all I have to do is look out my window!

The "Salon Marocain"

The living-room is an extremely important part of every Moroccan household. It's where families gather to share all of their meals, where the tea is served, where  guests are entertained and even where family members can sleep for the night.

The Moroccan living room is always characterized by the banquette type seating that goes around the room, creating tones of seating. Although they all have the same basic shape, it's very interesting to see how each family has their own twist on the banquette. Textures, colors, trims and cousins vary from household to household. It adds a really personal touch to the home and the possibilities are endless.

During my visit to Morocco last fall, I picked up this great architecture and interior design magazine: Maisons du Maroc. It features great decors that mix both traditional and modern elements, with a splash of Moroccan flavor.

This specific number was actually focused on the Moroccan living-room. Great! Here are a couple of  great spaces I wanted to share with you.

Even if these are typically of Moroccan design, I could very well imagine them in a North American home!

I love the great details in the wall texturing.

A cozy nook to relax in!

It’s all about the details!

Morning bird breakfast plate

I just wanted to share this great little find I did at Peir 1 Imports (for 8$) . I immediately  fell in love with this little number and I couldn’t stop myself from buying it. I must say that I have a huge soft spot for bird inspired objects. I’m not that crazy about real birds but I quite fancy the bird memorabilia!!!
